Small business is the engine that will pull us out of this recession. That is what everyone seems to agree on, which means we should be watching the major trends affecting small business.
Blogger Steve King over at Small Business Labs (one of my favorite blogs on SMB trends) posted this presentation and post titled Presentation on 2009 Top 10 Business Trends, which includes a link to a text version. Here they are:
- The recession drives small business innovation (and efficiency).
- Government plays an increasing role in the economy.
- Global infrastructure and stimulus spending.
- The number of small businesses will increase in 2009.
- Small business globalization will temporarily slow.
- Baby boomer retirement problems lead them to small business.
- Gen Y turns to small business.
- Mobile computing continues strong growth.
- Cloud computing becomes mainstream for small business.
- Small business use of online marketing tools expands.

Great post. One thing that can help small business owners is independent companies that can handle different necessary services for a small business. If a business owner can pass off IT services and phone services and other things onto independent companies, it can save time and resources that they can use for handling their own business.

1. Often we forget the little guy, the SMB, in our discussions of the comings and goings of the Internet marketing industry. Sure there are times like this when a report surfaces talking about their issues and concerns but, for the most part, we like to talk about big brands and how they do the Internet marketing thing well or not so well.

Thanks for all of the comments - we happen to believe that small business is the engine of our economy and the best way to pull us out of the "ditch" we find ourselves in. Ialso believe that Web 2.0 and social media tools can level the playing field for small business. Have you seen our free tool to help CPAs and SMBlearn Web 2.0? http://www.cpalearning2.com

Interesting post. I think that a lot of this was true for 2010 and has remained true for 2011. Its interesting to see how important social interaction has become this year. I know my business has been taking drastic steps to ensure we remain in contact with out clients and work to build personal relationships.
