Top eight challenges facing finance executives

Our friends over at Financial Executives International recently shared this list from FEI's CEO, Marie Hollein. 

1. Controlling the U.S. deficit
2. Tax reform
3. Health care uncertainty
4. Dodd-Frank Act implementation and revision
5. Employer-provided retirement plans
6. XBRL
7. Convergence of U.S. GAAP and IFRS
8. Private company accounting

Last August, the MACPA had a group of CFOs and controllers in for a roundtable on what was keeping them up at night and came up with this list:

1. Communicating effectively (new tools vs. face-to-face)
2. Talent / training / succession planning
3. Economic environment
4. Generational / work-life balance
5. Supply chain / rising costs
6. Strategic planning in uncertainty
7. Financial literacy about business
8. Increasing government regulations
9. IT security / privacy

Then there's the latest top trends to watch in 2012 from the CPA Horizons Future Forum process. And here are the lists from 2009 and 2008 from our CFO roundtables.

What I find interesting is that the current list from FEI is focused purely on the business finance and economics issues, whereas our group of CFOs (and the CPA Horizons 2025 research) included much more of the general business, talent, and leadership issues. 

We have been gathering resources for CPAs in the form of training, articles, and podcasts to help them deal with these major issues. Here is a page with each major future trends and links to resources. We also have plenty of programs available for almost all of these topics, either in our conferences and public seminars or available to your firm or organization through our Customized Learning Team.

The other interesting insight I take away from all of this is the change from 2009 (in the thick of the recession) from the other years. Three of the seven issues -- layoffs, capital spending cuts, and access to credit) -- have disappeared. Does that mean we are seeing bright posts on the horizon?

Data (and XBRL) is the new plastics

Remember the Simon & Garfunkel song "Mrs. Robinson" from the movie, "The Graduate?"

It follows the story of recent college grad Benjamin Braddock, who was trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life. He then gets seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson, only to fall in love with her daughter. It is a classic '60s comedy featuring some great performances. 

If you were rewriting the movie script for "The Graduate," you could change the scene where the guy walks up to Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman as the young graduate) to give him career advice from "Plastics ... enough said" to "Data ... enough said!"

That is structured and standardized data, the kind that XBRL Global Ledger creates. Combine standardized data with data visualization tools that help make sense of the data and you can see why data is the new plastics!

Actually, the full "Graduate" reference is from Steve King's post, Data is the new Plastics, over at Small Business Labs, and I couldn't agree with him more. Steve is the futurist who helped Intuit examine the future in its 2020 report. (He also attended the CPA Horizons 2025 future forum in San Francisco last spring.) Here is what Steve said in his post:

"Last week we held a workshop on data and analytics with our research partners at Intuit.  We had a mix of experts on data and analytics from both large and small organizations. 

There was a very clear consensus that there is a shortage of people with data and analytical skills  -- and this shortage is going to get worse and last a long time."

Data ... enough said!

Once again, the research from Intuit and Steve King is spot-on with the research from the CPA Horizons 2025 report, which identified technology (XBRL, transparency, the cloud and social technologies) as the biggest driver of change (and opportunity) for CPAs in the future. Check out these three key insights from the Horizon's report:

"The way CPAs report and analyze financial information will be changed because of changes in technology."

"Technology is going to drive financial reporting to be faster, even to the point of being real time."

"The profession will need to adopt and become a leader in effectively using new technology."

XBRL: It's all the niche you'll ever need

Here's what we know: CPAs are going to be in high demand and incredibly marketable for at least the next decade or so.

Here's what we can assume: There will be a jump in the number of students who are studying accounting in college for the next few years. If the market wants more CPAs, we're going to see more people studying to become CPAs.

Here's my question for all of those future CPAs: How are you going to differentiate yourselves?

It's a fair question. In a market that is begging for talented CPAs, how are you going to get a leg up on the competition?

The answer might be four letters long: XBRL.

Ernie Capozzoli, an accounting professor at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, has spent the last six years or so shoehorning XBRL in to his already-crowded accounting curriculum. It wasn't an easy thing to do.

"Accounting curriculums are crammed with required courses to meet the demands of the industry," he said. "Consequently, introducing new material means that something else has to be given up."

That's evidence of XBRL's importance, though, isn't it? Here's an accounting professor who's willing for forego some other part of the curriculum so that he can teach XBRL.

Still, it might be a worthwhile task if Capozzoli could give us proof that learning XBRL is paying off for his students.

Enter Jeff Petka.

A accountant with Georgia-based energy giant Southern Company, Petka says he owes his career to what he learned in Capozzoli's XBRL lessons.

"It has improved my career exponentially because it's given me a very valuable niche in the company in which I can help them use XBRL," Petka said. "I've been able to take over the XBRL side at Southern Company and help that grow."

Did you catch that? How many of us have waited years to find a niche that sets us apart from the rest and puts us on a path to greatness? Petka found it right out of the gate, thanks to Capozzoli's foresight.

Looking for an edge, CPAs? Try XBRL

The XBRL train keeps picking up steam.

With Year 3 of the SEC's mandate rolling on, nearly all public companies are filing their financial reports via XBRL, bringing us this close to realizing the data tagging language's long-promised potential.

And that may not even be the most interesting recent development in the XBRL arena.

• Auditors are starting to pay close attention as they search for ways to help their clients make the switch to XBRL through services like assurance, knowledge-sharing and training.


• The MACPA is serving as a case study of sorts for how private companies can use XBRL. In fact, the association has been asked by the Financial Accounting Standards Board to work on a separate XBRL taxonomy for non-profit organizations.


• Even governments are getting into the act. The state governments in Nevada and Oregon are setting the pace, and others -- including Maryland's -- are testing the waters to find out if XBRL can boost transparency and accountability at a governmental level.

All of this XBRL activity got me thinking: What's new on the regulation side of the ledger? So I sat down with Louis Matherne at the 2011 XBRL U.S. Conference and asked him a few questions.

Matherne is the FASB's chief of taxonomy development, and he had some terrific insights about some of the surprising things he's learned about XBRL as the SEC's mandate has expanded.

Most significantly, he sees some huge opportunities for CPAs who take the time now to learn a thing or two about XBRL.

"We are taking the exchange of financial information into a place where we've not been before," said Matherne. "CPAs are going to be expected to be knowledgeable about what's going on in this space and should be prepared to help public companies and private companies alike.

"XBRL is really about the exchange of more valuable financial information," he added. "We're seeing XBRL enabling a greater exchange, collection and analysis of information. CPAs need to be a part of that equation. Whether we're talking about opining on that information or just helping clients understand what this is going to mean for them as they start to exchange their information in this important new medium, XBRL creates a real advantage for the CPA who has this skill set."

DATA Act: The federal case for XBRL

The federal government has come to some hard truths about its financial data.

1. It's wildly inaccurate.
2. The ways in which it's reported are horribly inefficient.
3. Citizens can't trust that they're getting accurate, transparent data from their government until both problems are fixed.

Give the government credit, though. It's trying really hard to do just that.

On Sept. 30, President Obama signed into law the Children and Family Services Innovation and Improvement Act. A provision in that law requires the Department of Health and Human Services to designate common data reporting standards to govern the reports that states submit outlining how they spend federal child welfare funds.

In short, the government has just standardized the reporting process for states that receive federal funds for child welfare programs -- and that standarization will likely look a lot like XBRL.

That's one small step toward accurate data.

The giant leap, though, might be yet to come.

There's a piece of legislation moving through Congress right now called the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act, or DATA Act. That bill calls for the creation of an independent body that would track all federal spending on a single website and require the use of consistent government-wide data standards.

Here's why the DATA Act is a big deal:

Current government spending is reported to databases that feed into the website USAspending.gov. That site "is "plagued with accuracy problems and problems with completeness," says Hudson Hollister. "The reason for that is (government) agencies' inability to get their IT systems to talk with one another."

Hollister is legal counsel for House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, whose chair, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California, is sponsor of the DATA Act.

According to Hollister, $80 billion is spent annually on federal government IT, but only 34 percent of the data found on USAspending.gov is believed to be accurate.

"It should be possible," says Hollister, "for citizens, watchdog groups, media, and even the appropriators in Congress to use all of this spending data to judge whether government is working for them or not."

The solution, he and Issa believe, is a single platform for federal spending information, driven by a consistent, government-wide set of data reporting standards.

Sound familiar, XBRL fans?

"The DATA Act does not require the use of XBRL per se," Hollister stressed. "It does require the designation of a reporting standard that has many of the characteristics of XBRL, and to  be blunt, I think XBRL would be the standard that will be selected."

It's nice to see the federal government finally catching up to what the profession and data guru David Stephenson have been saying for years: XBRL has the power to transform our financial world.

And CPAs? They have an important role to play in all of this as well, says Hollister.

"CPAs are to be commended for being impartial in most circumstances -- in business and policy decisions, for instance," he said. "In this case, CPAs can be advocates for the accuracy and efficiency that structured data can bring."

In other words, let the numbers speak for themselves -- and let us help create the standards that help numbers do just that.

Stop hoarding data. Start liberating it.

"Information," the old cliche goes, "is power."

What a crock. Information isn't power. In its rawest form, information is just ... data.

Give that information context, though, so that it tells a story, paints a picture, helps us make better decisions -- that's power. Go one step further and make that information available anytime, anywhere, in any format, and you can rule the world.

So says David Stephenson. The principal of Stephenson Strategies and author of "Data Dynamite: How Liberating Information Will Transform Our World," Stephenson drew some interesting conclusions about our data-centric world during a recent phone conversation. For instance:

• We're data hoarders. We need to be data liberators. Ours is a data-hungry world. The problem, says Stephenson, is that once we get our hands on some data, we lock it away and guard it with our lives. And there it sits in our data warehouses, doing us little to no good. "Data should automatically be available to those who need it, when and where they need it, in a form they can actually use, and with the freedom to use it as they choose," he said.


• The social movement gives depth to data. Can you crowdsource data? Absolutely, says Stephenson. "No matter how brilliant an individual might be," he says, "I would argue that, almost without exception, you will end up with a richer, more nuanced interpretation of data when you have multiple people looking at it at the same time."


• XBRL is the "secret sauce." You just knew this conversation would get around to XBRL sooner or later, didn't you? With good reason. "If I gave you the number 6, in the abstract, what does that mean?" says Stephenson. "Is it somebody's age? A street address? But if you bracket that with, say, the XBRL size tag, it now has context and meaning. Just as important, that data can then flow in real time anywhere that those same tags are found. We no longer have to go searching for data."

Firm rotation, XBRL put auditors in the spotlight

Let's talk auditing for a few minutes.

The big news, of course, is the PCAOB's bid to enact mandatory audit firm rotation. Such a move would limit the number of consecutive years a firm could audit a public company and, the PCAOB hopes, enhance auditor independence and objectivity.

Not everyone thinks it's a good move, though, and there's a spirited debate taking place among folks like Francine McKenna, Jim Peterson, the Wall Street Journal's Matthew Quinn and others.

If you want to join the debate, the PCAOB is accepting comments through Dec. 14. If you have an opinion, now's the time to speak up.

And while you're chewing on that, let's throw XBRL into the auditing mix, too.

The XBRL discussion typically revolves around public companies and the issues they face in meeting the SEC's XBRL deadlines. The occasional non-profit company and government entity enter the discussion from time to time, but little is said about the impact the XBRL movement will have on the auditors of companies that file their financials via XBRL.

Eric Cohen, though, is speaking up.

Auditors aren't required to play an active role in XBRL implementation, but Cohen, who co-founded XBRL itself, said they can still do plenty to help their clients make the switch through services like assurance, knowledge-sharing and training.

"Just because the SEC says there is no required auditor involvement, it doesn't mean our clients aren't looking to their auditors for help, or even expecting it," Cohen said. "Many companies believe their auditors are the best people around to help match their existing financial statement facts with the concepts in U.S. GAAP financial reporting taxonomy. Or maybe their auditors can just take a quick look to see that everything's OK."

Trusted advisors, right? That's what CPAs do. Cohen offers these and some other thoughts in this MACPA podcast.

Everyone into the XBRL pool. How's the water?

Phase 3 of the SEC's three-part XBRL mandate is under way, and this is the big one: Some 8,000 public companies begin filing their financial reports this year. They join nearly 1,700 of the nation's largest public entities that began the process during the first two years of the mandate.

In other words, XBRL is no longer "the next big thing" or "on the horizon." It's here. Everyone is doing it because ... well, because everyone has to do it.

It's time for XBRL to start fulfilling its promise, and Eric Cohen says it's well on its way.

"The level of depth is such that analysts can make use of thousands, and in some cases tens of thousands, of barcoded facts from which they can pull information," Cohen, who co-founded the data tagging language, said in a recent MACPA interview. "Companies can now tell their stories and communicate to the marketplace things that used to get lost."

The results? More transparent information and better financial decisions, hopefully.

In the meantime, there are some things worth noting as thousands of new filers join the XBRL club. Among them:

• New filers have two years to get things right. The XBRL filing process includes a 24-month span of reduced liability that Cohen calls the "no harm, no foul" period. "If companies find out there is an error in their XBRL filing and they fix it on a timely basis, then no harm, no foul," he said. "Once the (24-month) bell tolls, that XBRL will be subject to the same liability as traditional filings. Entering Year 3, we're seeing the first group of required filers hearing that bell, and the market is very interested to see what's going on there."

• An interesting twist: New filers typically face a two-year process in which they report some fairly basic information in Year 1 and more complex details in Year 2. However, Cohen said it's possible that a new filer might find itself having to skip a step and immediately make the more complex filings. "Let's say they had a really great year (financially) and because of that they become a large accelerated filer as of Dec. 31. That company may go from the simpler (Year 1) filing to having to provide detailed filings with their first (Form) 10-K and not have that extra year to prepare for that more sophisticated filing."

Interesting things to chew on as we watch XBRL's progress in the United States. Cohen offers some others in this MACPA podcast.

Dy-no-mite opportunity for CPAs

There's dynamite, and then there's DY-NO-MITE.

Remember Jimmie "JJ" Walker from the hit series "Good Times" in the 1970s?

That is the kind of dynamite I am talking about -- his huge smile and trademark phrase, "DY-NO-MITE" to denote all things great.

That was my reaction to David Stephenson's new book, Data Dynamite: How Liberating Information Will Transform Our World, which should be on every CPA, CFO, CEO and CIO summer reading list. 

David talks about blowing up our old ways of thinking about data. He suggests we dynamite current practices and create a DY-NO-MITE combination of real-time data, data visualization tools, and collaborative anaylsis to produce new group insights. He sums it up this way: "When we do that, we can do things more quickly, integrate more perspectives, and adapt more rapidly than ever before. There has simply never been this kind of power and insight before."

Isn't this exactly what we need in this "new normal?"

David explains the power of XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) as a foundation for building new tools to help us thrive in this permanent whitewater envorinment. He talks about "data nuggets," tagging at the transaction level to get the most "gold" out of your data mines.

In the book, he says, "When data is tagged, it becomes more valuable because it has context and meaning, rather than being mere numbers or words. It is this form of data transformed and elevated into information by use of tags." These data nuggets unleash the power of your data and turn it into information and knowledge for your organization.

We should know. That is exactly what we have done at the MACPA. Using XBRL Global Ledger (XBRG GL) and some guidance from Eric E. Cohen, we have tagged our data at the transaction level and are now producing "drill-down" financials, and seamlessly inputting our financial data into a KPI analysis package, saving us time and greatly speeding up the availability of information for financial analysis by our management team. (See our prior blog post and case study with Altova.) 

The book provides lots of examples from federal and state governments (both U.S. and overseas), businesses, health care, and others. David shows how we can use XBRL, data visualization and the wisdom of the crowd to reduce costs, create efficiencies, and gain much faster and deeper insights to act on information faster than ever. In other words: "DY-NO-MITE!"

I really like David's seven principles for liberating data:

1. Data should be free.
2. Data should be available to all who need it.
3. Data should be shared.
4. When appropriate, release real-time data for outside use and scrutiny.
5. Data should flow seamlessly.
6. Make your organization data-centric.
7. Don’t violate personal privacy and / or security standards.

I first met David on Twitter. Then, he presented "Gov 2.0" at our Maryland Business and Accounting Expo in 2009. It is great to see this book in print and the shout-outs to many of our XBRL friends and leaders in the movement, including Eric E. Cohen, Neal Hannon, Mike Willis, Diane Mueller and Charlie Hoffman.

MACPA and XBRL: A small biz case study

When folks talk about XBRL, it's usually from a public company perspective -- as if public companies are the only ones that can benefit from efficiency, transparency, speed and cost-effectiveness.

Everyone wants those things -- public companies, sure, but private companies, non-profits and governments as well.

The MACPA wants them too, so it embraced the promise of XBRL and set off to find them.

In an effort to demonstrate XBRL’s scope and versatility, the MACPA is using the data tagging language to populate its financial information and key performance indicator reports. The project could become a blueprint of sorts for how private companies and non-for-profit organizations can take advantage of XBRL’s power.

I had an opportunity to talk to the principals involved with the MACPA's project recently, and to a person, they all agreed: XBRL goes way beyond the public company arena.

Here's MACPA Finance Director Skip Falatko: "XBRL would be an excellent application for the non-profit community. There are about a million and a half non-profits in the U.S., and probably hundreds of thousands of them file Form 990 (the annual non-profit tax return) every year. If the IRS required non-profits to file Form 990 via XBRL, that would greatly increase and improve accountability, transparency and comparability in the non-profit world."

Here's Salisbury University accounting student and MACPA intern Thomas Hood, who volunteered his technical wizardry: "Our ability to take (XBRL) in-house, implement it and see benefits fairly quickly at a pretty low cost made us realize that XBRL Global Ledger is real and can really help."

Here's Beth O'Brien from Altova, which provided the software the MACPA used in its XBRL project: "The MACPA has showed that not only can the benefits of XBRL extend to smaller companies, but they brought the project in-house, did the project very cost-effectively and were able to show some tangible results. ... It's a model case study, really."

Here's XBRL co-founder Eric Cohen, who smoothed out the rough edges with sage guidance and advice: "People think XBRL is all about big companies doing public company filings with the SEC. What's being proven here is that it's an awful lot more than that. There is value to not-for-profits and government entities."
